Prior to training as a physician I was a Communications Engineer in the Canadian Military. I broke my leg at the age of 20 and experienced for the first time what it was like to be a patient, and observed what a physician does. At some point in my recovery I became aware that my calling was to be a doctor. Once accepted into medical school, I committed to service in the Canadian Forces Medical Service. Military medicine mandated mastering skills in trauma, sports medicine, and limb reconstruction. The transition to New York State in 1993 allowed me to function with these skills as a generalist primarily at Upstate Medical University.
